Assessment Made Simple

A practical qualification designed for distance learning

The Pearson BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualification has been carefully designed so learners can complete their practical work from home or their normal study setting.

Throughout the course, learners build their practical skills by completing a wide range of cooking activities. They receive regular feedback and guidance before preparing for their final assessment.

The final assessment requires learners to plan, prepare and present a two-course meal in response to a Pearson assessment brief.

Assessment is completed remotely from the learner's own kitchen, or study setting with a qualified assessor observing via a secure video call. Coursework is then internally assessed and quality assured before Pearson moderation.

Successful learners receive a nationally recognised Pearson BTEC qualification.

Meet Claire

Hello, I'm Claire

I created Making Skills because I believe every learner deserves the opportunity to develop confidence, independence and skills for life in an environment where they feel supported, encouraged and able to succeed.

My approach

I believe the best learning happens when young people feel safe, supported and inspired to have a go. Every lesson combines practical activities, encouragement and personalised guidance to help learners build confidence while developing real-life cooking skills.

Building Confidence

Helping young people develop confidence, independence and practical skills that last a lifetime.

"Every learner is different, and that's exactly how it should be. My role isn't simply to teach cooking—it's to encourage confidence, celebrate progress and help every young person achieve more than they thought possible."

Frequently asked questions

Can I complete the course entirely from home/from a distance?

Yes. The Pearson Level 1 and 2 BTEC Home Cooking Skills qualifications has been designed to be completed through 100% distance learning, allowing learners to study from home or in their provision while receiving regular teacher support from Making Skills.

Who is this course suitable for?

Our online Pearson Home Cooking Skills course is suitable for anyone aged 14 and over, regardless of previous cooking experience. Whether you're home educated, attending school, receiving alternative provision or simply looking to develop practical life skills while gaining a nationally recognised qualification, the course is designed to support learners of all abilities. A range of weekly recipes and differentiated activities ensure everyone can learn at a pace that's right for them.

How do the practical cooking lessons work?

Each week, you'll receive a selection of recipes with different levels of challenge, allowing you to choose one that matches your confidence and ability. Practical cooking can be completed at a time that suits you, giving you the flexibility to fit learning around family life and other commitments. Learners should complete practical activities with an appropriate level of adult supervision based on their age, experience and the task being undertaken. Live lessons are recorded, so you can revisit demonstrations whenever you need them.

Do I need previous cooking experience?

Not at all. The course is suitable for learners of all abilities.

Each week, learners are provided with a choice of practical recipes, allowing less confident cooks to build their skills while offering more experienced learners additional challenge.

Step-by-step video demonstrations accompany each practical session, so every learner can cook with confidence at their own pace.

What equipment do I need?

The course has been carefully designed so that no specialist equipment is required.

Learners complete the practical activities using everyday kitchen equipment found in most homes.

A full equipment and ingredient guide is provided before the course begins.

How are practical lessons assessed?

Throughout the course, learners regularly reflect on the practical skills they are developing and receive personalised tutor feedback.

During weekly live lessons, learners can ask questions, share their progress and receive guidance to continually improve their cooking techniques.

Do I have to cook every week?

No. While we encourage learners to take part in the weekly practical activities to build their confidence and skills, you do not need to cook every week. Throughout the course, learners need to demonstrate a wide range of practical cooking skills to meet the qualification requirements. This flexible approach allows you to work around holidays, family commitments, appointments and other responsibilities while still making steady progress through the course.

How much support do learners receive?

Learners have the opportunity to interact with their tutor every week during live online sessions.

Additional one-to-one support can also be arranged whenever needed, ensuring learners feel confident and well supported throughout the qualification.

What happens if I miss a lesson?

Don't worry.

All live lessons are recorded and uploaded to the learner portal, allowing sessions to be completed at a convenient time.

If you have any questions after watching a recording, you can contact your tutor for additional guidance and support.

Is the qualification nationally recognised?

Yes.

The qualification is awarded by Pearson, one of the UK's leading awarding organisations, and is recognised by schools, colleges and employers across the country.

How are assessments completed?

The qualification is assessed through a practical coursework assignment.

Learners will plan, prepare and present a two-course meal, demonstrating the knowledge and practical skills they have developed throughout the course.

During the programme, learners receive step-by-step guidance and personalised tutor support to help them prepare for the assessment.

The final practical assessment can be completed from home, with an approved invigilator observing remotely via a secure video call.

How much time should I expect to spend each week?

We recommend allowing approximately 3 hours each week, including the live online lesson, practical cooking session and independent coursework activities. Learners are encouraged to work at a pace that suits them, and resources remain available to revisit whenever needed.
